Chantico

Daddy's home, and he stopped at Starbucks! We love Daddy! Posted by Hello

Why is it important that he stopped at Starbucks, you ask? Because of this amazing drink:
In a completely unfair, below the belt move, this drink is not sold in Hawaii. The only place it exists here is in the Starbucks on the wrong side of security at the airport. Apparently, Hawaii is a part of Starbucks' international market. Chantico is not being sold in the international stores, because, get ready for it, the foreign markets DON'T LIKE CHOCOLATE!
Right.
The drink was delicious. I'm off to the Starbucks website to write a formal complaint.

First jump Posted by Hello

The most wonderful thing just happened!

We went on a quick outing today to pick up a lei for Wendall, who is flying home as I type. We stopped by the bookstore where I found the authors of a book I've been wanting to buy. They were under a tent outside the store, talking and signing. Wendall had very little interest, so he wandered to the next tent, which was for the Relay for Life, a race to raise funds for cancer research. They gave him grapes and balloons and had a great time talking to him. It is rainy here today, so there are not many people wandering about outside.

I finally got the book I wanted and I called Wendall inside so I could pay for it. He pointed out one of the people he had just been talking to, who was now inside the store. We said hello, and Wendall told me that the man had been fun to talk to.

As I approached the counter, the two people he had spent the most time talking to came up to us with a bag. "Wendall, we had so much fun talking to you about heros that we wanted to get you something!" they said, and they handed him two books! One book is about the Justice League, which includes Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman. The second book is a Spiderman book. I have a feeling Uncle Kurt might be called on to read that one to him.

The fact that these two strangers would go out of their way to be extra super kind to a little boy makes my entire being happy. My heart is smiling, and will smile every time we read these books. I am filled with aloha right now, and I want to share the joy with the world.

Anthony and Jaime, thank you so much for sharing your aloha with us. We will carry this memory for a long long time.

My sweet boy

I did not feel well today. I had a horrible headache, and needed to lie down for a bit. I explained this to Wendall and asked him where I should rest. He told me that he did not need to rest, so I could be on the couch. (He takes about half of his naps on the couch) I set him up with a movie, a drink, and some toys, and took a few excedrine. He made sure I had a pillow, and even brought his favourite blanket from his bedroom. He played quietly and watched TV, and at one point he brought me a drink.

Such a good loving boy. How did I get so lucky?
And I feel better.

New indoor playground

play ball! Posted by Hello

We had a very nice day today. After storytime at the library, we discovered that the new fast food spot had opened on base. It has a Burger King and a Popeys and a play section. Wooo hooo! We had a very nice time playing, and then went on our way. Thankfully, it is located at an entrance that we rarely use, but I am sure it will be our favourite place to meet Daddy for lunch.

Start 'em early! Posted by Hello
We met the Uncles at the bar outside the dollar theater, and then went inside to see "The Polar Express" Have no fear, the boy is just drinking fruit punch. This is a fully posed shot.

The funny thing about Hawaii is that most places to go have bars. There's just no getting around it. The weather is almost always beautiful, and the idea of an open air bar is just too good to not have one on every corner.

Now here's the amusing part. I really don't drink and I'm not actually all that fond of eating outside. Why do I spend so much time at outdoor bars then? Because there is one on every corner, and the pupu's are cheap during happy hour, and I'll miss them when I'm gone.

TV as a bad influence on children

I keep hearing about the TV show about the nanny who comes in and fixes discipline problems. It sounded interesting, ad I was even near the TV tonight, so I turned it on. Wendall was still awake, due to a glitch in scheduling, so we watched it together.

Now let me say up front, for the benefit of those who have not spent time with him, that I have a remarkably well behaved child. He is truly a little joy who is capable of understanding right and wrong, and he is able to control himself in almost any situation. That said, he is also a typical three year old, complete with temper tantrums and meltdowns. He is pretty good at keeping it together until we are away from other people, but at home he can be a huge handful.

So we sit together and watch this show, starring a toddler boy who cries and throws toys and does not believe his parents when they attempt to discipline him. Wendall took one look and said "That is a bad boy." I agreed, and we discussed what the boy was doing that made him "bad". No one should throw toys. Hitting is bad, yelling is not nice, discuss problems, don't just cry.

The show had so many issues, and in general was well done. By the end of the hour, however, Wendall was asking me what sort of punishment he would receive if he acted the way the children on TV were acting. I swear that by the end of the show, he was deciding which behaviors he would copy. Argh! I told him he was a good boy and did not act in this way, but he told me that he was bad, and needed to be on time out.

I have a feeling that tomorrow won't be fun.

I also don't foresee me seeing a second episode of the show.

A nice simple day

We are having a quiet day today. After a hectic weekend, we wanted to relax and do laundry. So that's what we are doing. Lunch will be the lau lau that were purchaced for dinner almost a week ago, and then I think we will spend some time running around in the field.

Maybe, if we are feeling really adventurous, we will make it to the library!

Drat!

The day started out badly, and I'm guessing it might stay not good. Yesterday Wendall "won" a glider plane at the arcade, and we managed to get it to fly once or twice. He told me last night that he wanted it to be in his room at night, and I said that would be fine. He put the plane on his rug (printed with streets and buildings) and went to sleep--I thought. At some point in the middle of the night he needed me, and I cuddled up with him for a little bit. This morning, I awake to sobs. Turns out he had moved the plane to the bed at some point, and of course it had been crushed by his mean mommy.

Today will be difficult.

Counting

On Tuesday I told Wendall that we would go to the circus on Sunday. He asked how long we had to wait, so I told him five days, and he held up his hand, and repeated "five". He has not asked about it since.

Last night, while making weekend plans, I mentioned to my brother that we would be going to the circus while they are at the Pro Bowl. Wendall immediately said "Not yet, Mommy. We slept three times. We have to wait five times." I asked him how much longer we had to wait. He looked down at his hand, held up five fingers, took away three, looked up at me and said "Two?"

Wow!

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables

Phantom faces at the window
Phantom shadows on the floor
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.
-Les Miserables

This has been a difficult week, with the death of one friend in the middle of the anniversary of the deaths of two other friends. My family has had a difficult year, filled with the losses of these wonderful men. I want now to say that the loss has been tempered with love, and with the addition of new members to our extensive family, but really I can't. Honestly, the losses are just losses, and the additions are joyous, but do nothing to mend our hurting hearts.

All week long, I have tried to listen for the voices of these men as they speak to my soul. I have had bits of songs and images in my mind, and I have done my best to allow these moments to come through me simply, without pain, and without sorrow. The contributions that these men made in my life were great, and I celebrate the me they helped create.

Thank you JC, for being the Quixote to my father's Quixana. Thank you for being there at the moment that my world began. Thank you for my parents.

Thank you Jon, for being the quiet reflection of my parents shimmering and ever changing path. Thank you for loving two silly girls as they learned to stretch and grow. Thank you being our family.

These men brought me joy, and more importantly, they were a part of my family. True friendships never do end, as the memories of those we've lost are imprinted on our hearts. I ask you to honor those around you every chance you get. Tell them again and again and again how much they mean to you, and what impact they have had on your life.

Tonight I sat at a table in my favorite restaurant, eating and talking and enjoying an evening with friends. I truly enjoyed myself, but the song continued to play in my head.

The table of my life is large, and the friends who have gathered around it have been a diverse, beautiful group. The empty chairs at the table are reminders that I am loved, and that I have loved. They are also a reminder for me to look again at the faces that remain, and to draw them close, and tell them how much I treasure their presence in my life.

The view from Kaena Posted by Hello

The lei near the water at Kaena Point, the most peaceful place I know. Posted by Hello

Sending Love to Richard

Richard's lei Posted by Hello

Richard's lei

Today I said goodbye to Richard. I picked out a beautiful lei, a mix of fragrant, colorful flowers, and I drove to Kaena Point on the North Shore of Oahu. I made my way down the dunes and over the rough rocks and tossed Richard's lei towards the water. It stuck on the sharp a'a lava rocks partway down, and I somehow thought it fitting that his lei, like the man it represented, would cling for a few moments to a world full of beauty and pain. Richard managed to squeeze a few extra precious moments out of his life, and so did his lei.
Before I sent the flowers down to the water, I took a moment to think of the thoughtful, caring, vibrant man I knew. I thought of the lives he had touched, and of the stories he had told. I thought of the love he had given, and of the love he had received. I thought of all of this, and then I allowed the flowers to slip from my grasp, fragile and free, past the earth, past the water, and into whatever might be next.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This song played on the radio as I drove home tonight. I smiled, thinking of Richard, thankful that his pain has been transcended by his beauty.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I saw you in my dream
We were walking hand in hand
On the white sandy beach of Hawaii
We were playing in the sun
We were having so much fun
On the white sandy beach of Hawaii
The sound of the ocean soothes my restless soul
The sound of the ocean rocks me all night long
Those hot, long summer days
Laying there in the sun
On the white sandy beach of Hawaii
The sound of the ocean soothes my restless soul
The sound of the ocean rocks me all night long
Oh last night in my dream I saw your face again
We were there in the sun
On the white sandy beach of Hawaii

I went out last night!

Ok, you won't believe me, but I went out last night with the Sibs. We went o se Fishbone in concert, and then we went to one of the most popular nightclubs in town. And I wore jeans! Watch out, the news may report flying pigs in the next few days.

Ossie Davis

What an amazing man. Such a full life, and such an important part of our history.
